Join us for Marcus Garvey Day at Brooklyn Peace Center on Saturday, August 17th! This vibrant event honors Garvey’s profound influence on Black, Pan African, and Diasporic cultures and movements. Enjoy a day filled with music, art, culture, and thought-provoking conversations.

Event Schedule:

10:30 AM – Pan-African Drum and Dance by Cumbe Dance

Start the day with a performance by Cumbe Dance, celebrating the rich traditions of Pan-African rhythms and movements.

11:00 AM – Inaugural Words by Kazembe Batts

Kazembe Batts (Brother Kaz), a pivotal figure in renaming Sumner Avenue to Marcus Garvey Boulevard and co-founder of the Universal Hip Hop Parade, will deliver opening remarks.

10:00 AM to 4:00 PM – Pan African and Diasporic Vendors (Fellowship Hall)

Explore a diverse range of vendors offering everything from organic candles to unique clothing and much more.

12:00 PM to 2:00 PM – Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony by Bunna Café (Community Room)

Experience the rich traditions of an Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony, hosted by Bunna Café.

12:30 PM to 3:30 PM – Food Hall by Chef Pandy

Savor delicious meals prepared by Chef Pandy, showcasing a variety of flavors and culinary traditions.

2:00 PM to 3:30 PM – Art Exhibit and Documentary Video (Community Room)

Enjoy an art exhibit featuring works by Parris Jaru and a documentary of his visit to Shashemene, Ethiopia.

4:00 PM to 5:30 PM – Panel Discussion (Community Room)

Join a thought-provoking panel discussion moderated by Dr. Nkosi Dubois Anderson, Professor of Africana Studies at Seton Hall, with panelists including Rev. Melake Tsion Kess Mahitama Selassie from the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. This panel is organized in partnership with NYU’s Center on Race, Inequality, and the Law.

7:00 PM – Music Celebration (Main Hall)

The day culminates with a music celebration featuring deep dub roots by Addis Pablo & friends.
